v1.5.0
[1.5.0] - 2026-03-02
Major expansion adding a complete second gamemode — play as a gladiator fighting for survival and freedom.
Added
Gladiator Gamemode
- Mode Selection Screen: Choose between Lanista (manage a ludus) or Gladiator (fight for freedom) at game start
- Character Creation: 5-step gladiator creation — origin (POW, Criminal, Volunteer, Slave), name, region of origin (8 regions), fighting class (8 classes), and stat allocation with 10 bonus points
- Gladiator Dashboard: Personal cell view with vitals (HP, stamina, morale, fatigue), stats, combat record, current orders, story progress, dominus favor, and freedom meter
- Status Alerts: Color-coded condition banners (injured, exhausted, low morale, low stamina, peak condition) visible at top of dashboard
Dominus AI System
- Monthly Orders: AI-controlled dominus issues orders each month — train, fight, rest, spar as partner, or punishment
- Personality Types: 5 dominus personalities (Fair, Harsh, Cruel, Indulgent, Ambitious) affecting order frequency, punishment severity, and food quality
- Obedience Tracking: Game tracks whether you actually followed orders (trained, fought) and penalizes disobedience with favor loss
- Performance Evaluation: Dominus evaluates wins, obedience, and crowd favor monthly, adjusting favor accordingly
- Being Sold: Dominus sells you if favor drops too low — new ludus, new companions, new dominus personality
Companion System
- Ludus NPCs: 4-8 AI gladiators in your ludus with name, class, level, stats, personality (Aggressive, Cunning, Loyal, Bitter, Jovial), and rank (Tiro, Veteran, Champion)
- Relationships: -100 to 100 relationship score with each companion, displayed as tiers (Enemy, Rival, Neutral, Friend, Brother)
- Interactions: Spar (XP + injury risk), Talk (morale + rumors), Challenge (dominance) — 2 interactions per month
- Companion Events: Companions can be sold away (actually removed from roster), killed, or freed
Arena Combat (Gladiator Mode)
- Full Combat UI: Matches the lanista combat screen — 3-column layout with animated class icons, ProgressBar HP/stamina, status effects, animated combat log with color-coded entries
- Action System: All 7 combat actions (attack, heavy attack, defend, dodge, special, rest, taunt) with proper stamina costs, cooldowns, and class-specific specials
- Crowd Favor: Dynamic crowd favor meter (0-100) that changes based on your combat actions — flashy moves earn favor, defensive play loses it
- Missio Mechanic: When you defeat an opponent, choose to spare or kill; when you lose, crowd favor determines if you receive mercy or die (game over)
- Async Combat Resolution: Log entries animate sequentially with delays for dramatic effect
Freedom System (Path to the Rudis)
- Libertas Tracker: 0-1000 progress meter toward freedom with named tiers (Unknown, Survivor, Known Name, Crowd's Favorite, Renowned, On the Threshold)
- Four Paths to Freedom:
- Path of Glory (Via Gloriae): 50 wins + 500 fame
- Path of Coin (Via Pecuniae): Save enough peculium to buy freedom (price scales with your value)
- Path of Patronage (Via Patroni): Attract a political patron through fame
- Path of Mercy (Via Misericordiae): Dominus favor 90+ after 36+ months and 200+ fame
- Freedom Trigger: When chosen path requirements are met, triggers the Rudis ceremony with path-specific narrative and career statistics
- Peculium: Personal fund from crowd tips, gambling, and gifts — tracked with full transaction history
Training (Gladiator Mode)
- 8 Training Regimens: Palus Drill, Sparring, Endurance, Agility, Strength, Tactics, Weapon Mastery, Showmanship — each with unique XP, stat gains, fatigue, and injury risk
- Assigned vs Sneak Training: Dominus assigns a regimen; training a different one risks being caught and losing favor
- Skill Point Allocation: Spend skill points (earned on level up) on any of the 5 stats with a dedicated allocation panel
- Monthly Limit: One training session per month, tracked in Redux to persist across screen navigation
Story & Events
- 10 Story Chapters: The Auction Block, Tiro, Blood and Sand, Brotherhood of the Damned, The Champion's Shadow, Sold!, Rise to Fame, A Patron's Game, The Price of Freedom, The Rudis — with progressive objectives and rewards
- 12 Random Event Types: Gift from a fan, punishment, feast, companion sold, new arrival, illness, rumor, sparring accident, visitor, dream of freedom, escape attempt (with moral choices), gambling
- Event Choices: Most events offer 2-3 choices with different consequences (morale, favor, peculium, relationships)
UI & Navigation
- Gladiator Layout: Full sidebar navigation matching the lanista MainLayout — collapsible desktop sidebar, mobile hamburger menu with slide-out drawer, bottom nav bar, dominus favor indicator
- 7 Navigation Screens: Cell (dashboard), Training, Ludus Life, Arena, Freedom, Peculium, Codex
- Top Bar: Player name, ludus name, date, peculium, libertas, fame, settings
Fixed
- Codex and Settings "back" buttons now return to the correct dashboard based on game mode
- Training and interaction limits persisted in Redux instead of local state (no longer reset when switching screens)
- Combat winner detection uses gladiator name (matching CombatEngine) instead of ID
- Fight completion tracked per month to prevent re-fighting
- Month-end processing checks actual obedience (did you train/fight as ordered) instead of auto-assuming compliance
- Stamina now restores (30% of max) during monthly natural recovery
foughtThisMonthflag properly resets on month advance- Companion sold events now actually remove the companion from the ludus roster
interactionsThisMonthcounter handles undefined state from save migration (no more NaN)
Changed
- Title screen "New Game" now routes to mode selection screen
- Title screen "Continue" respects current game mode (gladiator or lanista dashboard)
- Base font size increased from 16px to 17px for improved readability
- Game state extended with
gameModefield ('lanista' | 'gladiator') - Store updated with
gladiatorModereducer and persistence
