I do not know flake and nix, I cannot realy review it.
But this PR looks reasonable to me.
I think it would be useful for other users, if the README.md is updated. Can you update it?

Not sure if any of this is useful. Thought the flake at a minimum would help other nix users. If you didn't want the direnv changes (understandable) a nix user could invoke the flake environment directly with:
nix develop
