OpenRGB allows you to control the lighting on your computer hardware. This software works with many brands of keyboards, mice, motherboards, fans, and memory sticks. You do not need multiple apps for each piece of hardware. OpenRGB brings all your lights into one screen.
OpenRGB works on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It needs minimal system power to run. Ensure your computer meets these requirements:
- Operating System: Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit).
- Storage: 200 MB of free space on your hard drive.
- RAM: 4 GB minimum.
- Hardware: At least one RGB-capable peripheral connected via USB or internal headers.
- Permissions: Administrator access to communicate with hardware drivers.
You need the latest version of the application to ensure your hardware stays supported. Follow the steps below to find the correct file.

- Look for the section labeled "Assets" at the bottom of the newest release.
- Choose the file ending in
.exethat matches your Windows version. - Click the link to begin the download.
- Save the file to your computer.
Follow these steps to set up the software on your system.
- Locate the file you just downloaded in your Downloads folder.
- Double-click the
.exefile to start the installer. - Windows may show a security prompt. Click "More info" and then "Run anyway" if the system asks you to confirm.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Select a destination folder for the application.
- Click Install. The process takes less than one minute.
- Click Finish. The application icon should appear on your desktop.
Once you install the software, you must link it to your hardware.
- Open the OpenRGB application from your desktop icon.
- Wait a few seconds while the software scans your computer for connected devices.
- You will see a list of detected items in the main window.
- If a device fails to appear, click the "Rescan Devices" button found under the Device menu.
- Select a device from the list.
- Use the color picker to change the lighting. You can choose solid colors, breathing effects, or wave patterns.
- Click the "Apply" button to send the settings to your device.
- Save your favorite setup by clicking the "Save" tab and choosing a profile name.
OpenRGB provides several tools for managing your lighting.
- Device Profiles: Create unique looks for different games or times of day. Switch between them instantly.
- Syncing: Group several devices together so they show the same colors. Choose "Resize" to match zones across different hardware brands.
- Direct Mode: This allows other apps to take control of your lights for game-specific alerts.
- Plugins: You can extend functionality by adding files from the Plugins menu. This enables advanced effects or extra control options for specific motherboards.
- Network Access: Use this server setting to control the lights on another computer running the same software on your local network.
OpenRGB talks directly to your hardware. While the software is safe to use, keep these points in mind:
- Lighting controllers have limits. Some devices may show different colors if your power supply faces heavy loads.
- Always check for updates. New versions of the software provide better support for newer hardware releases.
- If you use other lighting software from your hardware manufacturer, close those apps before running OpenRGB. Running two programs at once can cause hardware conflicts and may lead to strange lighting behavior.
- Use the "Uninstall" tool found in the Windows Settings menu if you decide to remove the software. This clears all temporary driver files stored during setup.
Does OpenRGB work with all brands?

Will this slow down my computer?
OpenRGB uses very little CPU power. It only sends signals to your hardware when you change the colors or apply a new profile.
Can I break my hardware with this?
No. OpenRGB sends standard commands that your hardware is intended to receive. It cannot change the voltage or physical operation of your components.
How do I undo my changes?
Simply close the OpenRGB app or change the settings back to your preference. If you want to return to default settings, click the "Clear" or "Off" button within the device window.
