HostileRefereeGPT is a repository for maintaining GPT Builder instructions for journal-style adversarial self-audit of mathematical writing.
The repository stores editable source files and the built instruction file used in GPT Builder. The built file is committed because it is the deployed instruction text. The tool is intended for author-side auditing, not for confidential third-party peer review.
This project is an adversarial self-audit tool for mathematical writing. It is intended for:
- authors auditing their own manuscripts, drafts, lecture notes, or private notes;
- coauthors reviewing shared work;
- instructors or students analyzing material they are authorized to share;
- discussion of public mathematical texts, provided the use is not connected to a confidential referee, editorial, grant, hiring, admissions, or committee-evaluation role.
It is not a peer-review automation tool.
Do not use this project to generate, substantially draft, or outsource a referee report for someone else’s confidential submission unless the relevant editor, journal, publisher, institution, and confidentiality policy explicitly permit that use and all confidentiality obligations are satisfied.
Undisclosed or unauthorized use of generative AI in peer review may violate journal policy, peer-review confidentiality, and research-integrity norms. Some publishers and mathematical societies explicitly prohibit reviewers from uploading manuscripts into AI tools or using AI to carry out the review of a submitted manuscript.
In particular, this project must not be used to:
- upload or analyze a confidential manuscript that you received as a referee, editor, committee member, hiring reviewer, admissions reviewer, or grant reviewer without explicit authorization;
- produce a review-shaped report for submission to a journal while concealing AI assistance;
- use a public version of a text to bypass confidentiality duties attached to a referee, editorial, committee, grant, hiring, or admissions role;
- replace the reviewer’s own expert judgment;
- evade journal, publisher, society, institutional, or funding-body policies on AI use in review.
Permitted use does not remove responsibility. Users remain fully responsible for checking all mathematical claims, citations, counterexamples, severity judgments, and conclusions produced by the tool. See ETHICAL_USE.md for details.
Policies change, and the relevant venue’s current policy controls. The following official policies illustrate why this project draws a hard peer-review boundary:

After updating the prompt source and rebuilding, test the deployed GPT with disallowed prompts. The expected behavior is refusal, not an audit.

Only the modules named in Makefile are included in the built prompt.

- ethical-use and peer-review boundary;
- refusal rule for confidential evaluation of third-party work, including public text under such an assignment;
- prohibition on concealing AI assistance in peer review;
- adversarial review posture;
- anti-charity rule;
- no steelmanning;
- no invented citations;
- evidence hierarchy;
- anchor requirement;
- severity categories;
- counterexample requirement;
- patch-after-failure rule.

Referee mode is an author-side simulation mode. It is not for producing or submitting an actual confidential peer-review report.

Other module files may be kept in modules/ without being included in the build.
Custom instructions used to reproduce the maintainer's general-assistant style while discussing or maintaining this repository. They are included for reproducibility of repository-maintenance discussions, not as deployed GPT instructions. They are not part of the built GPT prompt, are not included by Makefile, and should not be pasted into GPT Builder Instructions.
Generated prompt files. These files are committed intentionally.
The Makefile path requires Git, GNU make, cat, wc, and a POSIX-style shell.
On Windows, WSL and MSYS2 work well. Git Bash also works if GNU make is installed and on PATH. If no make is available, use the PowerShell script at scripts/build-prompt.ps1.
Run the full build check from the repository root:
make verifyThis rebuilds the deployed prompt, enforces the 8000-character limit, checks that the committed build output is current, and runs the policy-contract audit.
For a build without the audit, run make. To remove generated files, run make clean.
PowerShell without make:

Keep the module short enough for the final prompt to remain under the GPT Builder limit.
A module should contain:
- trigger terms;
- failure modes;
- required checks;
- toy tests or minimal counterexamples;
- output requirements.
Test the module with an explicit output path:

The built prompt must be at most 8000 characters. make verify enforces this limit.
The PowerShell script reports .NET string length, which counts UTF-16 code units; for any character outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, .NET counts it as two code units, so the reported figure can exceed the code-point count wc -m reports. Before deployment, prefer make verify when a POSIX build environment is available.
For an alternate output file, check the length directly:

Commit source and build together when the built prompt changes.
Use WSL or MSYS2 with GNU make installed. Git Bash also works if GNU make is on PATH. Without make, run scripts/build-prompt.ps1 from PowerShell.
Remove lower-priority text, shorten module wording, or reduce the selected module set.
Run the canonical build check again, then paste only the contents of the built prompt file.
Edit workflow.md to strengthen the anchor requirement, finding structure, and final self-audit. Rebuild and update GPT Builder.
Edit the relevant file in modules/. Rebuild and update GPT Builder.
Do not deploy it.
Edit header.md to strengthen the peer-review boundary and refusal rule, rebuild, and retest the disallowed prompts.

The code and prompt sources are licensed under MIT. The ethical-use section above is a project norm and usage boundary, not a substitute for journal, institutional, publisher, funder, or legal obligations. Keeping the MIT license does not make undisclosed AI-assisted peer review acceptable.
If legal use restrictions are desired, do not use MIT; choose or draft a license with the intended restrictions after appropriate legal review.
