This repository contains a CLI tool, which can be used to maintain coding-rules in a project, where atc-coding-rules has been utilized.

The Atc.CodingRules.Updater.CLI library is available through a cross platform command line application.
The CLI itself targets .NET 10. The --projectTarget option lets you point at older runtimes β supported values are DotNetCore, DotNet5, DotNet6, DotNet7, DotNet8, DotNet9, DotNet10 (default), DotNet11.
The tool can be installed as a .NET Core global tool by the following command
dotnet tool install --global atc-coding-rules-updater --ignore-failed-sourcesor by following the instructions here to install a specific version of the tool.

rules are current" without writing anything.

--json Emit a machine-readable JSON summary on stdout
(per-file outcomes, package bumps, props drift)
instead of log output. Useful for CI.--failOnChanges combined with --dry-run writes nothing and returns 1 as soon as any file
would be created or updated, so a pull request can be blocked without the PR-creating workflow:
atc-coding-rules-updater run -p . --dry-run --failOnChangesReported-but-not-applied drift does not trip it. Drift is never applied by the tool, so a re-run would not resolve it and failing on it would leave the build permanently red.
--json writes a single JSON document to stdout and nothing else, so it can be piped straight
into jq:

}Outcome is one of Unchanged, Created, Updated or Skipped. Skipped means the
distribution had nothing to offer for that path; Unchanged means the local file was already
correct. Under --dry-run the same values describe what would have happened.
Two limitations of this mode:
- No diagnostics. Log output is suppressed so that stdout contains only the JSON document, so
--verbosehas no effect when--jsonis set. Drop--jsonto debug a run. Per-provider and per-file problems still surface β failures appear as anErrorproperty on the document. - No prompting.
--organizationNameand--repositoryNamemust be passed explicitly when those placeholders are still present, since prompting would hang waiting on stdin.
Note on --useLatestMinorNugetVersion: despite the name, the bump is bounded by the major
version, not the minor β a package on 3.0.54 will be moved to the newest 3.x, but never to 4.0.0.
Exit codes: run and sanity-check return 0 on success and 1 on failure. sanity-check
returns 1 whenever any error-severity diagnostic is found, in both the default and --json
output modes, so it can be used directly as a CI gate.

are cached under %TEMP%/AtcAnalyzerProviderBaseRules, and are what the temporary-suppression

DoneThe tool has an optional options parameter, which can be used to control the paths for persisting the .editorconfigs and props files. This can be applied as follows --optionsPath 'C:\Temp\atc-coding-rules-updater.json'
By default the atc-coding-rules-updater will detect projects in the solution and try to fetch the matching project specific rules and supply an .editorconfig in those projects. This mapping can however be over-ruled as seen in atc-coding-rules-updater.json example 3

To ensure that the latest version of the CLI tool atc-coding-rules-updater is being used, the following methodology can be used:
- Download the 2 files from
sampleinto a project root folder. - Modify the
atc-coding-rules-updater.jsonto the projects specific needs. - Run
atc-coding-rules-updater.ps1from PowerShell, oratc-coding-rules-updater.shfrom Bash (copy it from the repository root alongside theatc-coding-rules-updater.json).
The atc-coding-rules-updater downloads files from the atc-coding-rules repository's distribution folder.
From here it works with 2 concepts:
- Scaffolding files (
.editorconfigandDirectory.Build.props) - if a file does not exist - it creates a copy. - Updating files (
.editorconfig) - if a file exist - updates the files first content part and does not touch the second content part.- First content part is related to rules above the line

For both scenario A and scenario B, when the atc-coding-rules-update is executed a second time it will only update .editorconfig file. And as previously stated, it will only update the ATC-part of these files.
When starting with ATC rules on an existing project, the general recommendation is to initially suppress all failing rules in your Custom section in order to get back to β state for the project, and then later clean up the code and remove the suppressions one by one in nice clean commits.
The challenge is that this initial suppression list takes a long time to hand-write. In order to circumvent this tedious process, some extra flags have been added to the CLI to allow for auto-generation of these suppression lines. When utilizing these new options, the updater process will run a dotnet build on your project and extract any errors and create suppressions for these along with a count of how many occurences are present. The CLI will also add additional information, e.g: Category, Title, Link to the rule being broken.
The three CLI options for generating temporary suppressions are as follows.

Hence a requirement is that dotnet.exe can be called from the root path.
If there are multiple solution files in the root folder, the --buildFile option will then be required as a parameter when calling the CLI tool.
--buildFile Optional path to solution/project file - required when multiple solution files exist in the root pathRecognised solution and project files are .sln, .slnx and .csproj. If the root path contains
none of these, the build loop is skipped with a message rather than failing.
If a target in your build breaks the suppression build β an obfuscator, a signing step, a packaging step β there are two levers.
The build runs in Release by default, so if the target is Release-only, switching configuration is usually enough and requires no change on your side:

selects which targets to run at the top level and will not suppress a target hooked with
AfterTargets/BeforeTargets β so the target has to carry a condition it can respond to:

If the offending target comes from an imported third-party .targets file you cannot edit, check
whether it already exposes a disable property β most do.
