Hello,
I'm wondering if there is a way to map phonetic syllables to the actual English characters in the word?
I'm hoping to highlight the stressed syllables in the original word rather than of the phonetic syllables.
Any suggestions?

This is not currently part of the library. For many cases an online dictionary will give adequate results (RiTa's dictionary uses phonemes rather than letters), but an algorithm to compute this for arbitrary words is non-trivial. There are a number of existing approaches to both syllabification and hyphenation (similar but not the same) outlined in this paper and discussed here and here

If you find (or write) a rule-based syllabification algorithm that performs well, I'd be happy to consider adding it to the library

Thank you for the info - very helpful. While practising learning js, I'm experimenting writing a little app (no doubt reinventing the wheel) to help a friend from India practise with pronunciation and stresses of words. Now that I see the structure of RiTa's dictionary, I'm wondering if I could make my own dictionary specifically for this purpose (imagining I might simply replace the phonemes with the English syllables?). Is there a way to connect to a different dictionary? (It would likely only need a few hundred words to make a huge difference for my friend.)

This sketch shows how to add and remove items from the dictionary, and this one shows how to add custom phonemes (letters in this case) for a word, which might work for you...
