For me, this wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. Using and downloading Visual Code Studio really was easy. I would definitely like to play around and learn more about HTML in the future! For this assignment I examined the sourcecode for Voyant Tools (https://voyant-tools.org/), a basic text analysis platform that we discussed in a previous class session. According to the poking around I did with the Inspect function on my browser, the elements of the Voyant interface have been created using a combination of javascript, html, and css (mostly, the former). When I looked at particular components of the analysis toolboard (displayed on the screenshot above), it was interesting to be able to see which languages were used for where. For example, there's a ton of css used to render size and color of the words in the word cloud based on their frequency. Thinking about the entire sequence of rules and distinctions that needs to be stipulated to get from a count of a word's use to a graphic representation of this frequency compared to other words is mind-boggling, but definitely explains how large and complex the code environment for this site is.

Voyant is of course on GitHub and I believe this breakdown of component technologies confirms the conclusion reached when doing my own exploration.

It seems that, by the criteria of legibility, flexibility, and universality of application, this platform does suggest itself a representative of minimal computing. However, since one of the primary dimensions of MC seems to be the operation under some predefined set of limitations, it's difficult to determine whether this project meets this definition without knowing more about the circumstances surrounding its creation...

I examined the source code for Queerstory, a DH project that documents Toronto, Canada's queer history, including art and culture, activism, bars, and the community in general.

Queerstory was built using JavaScript and CSS--under 'Style Sheets' in the Inspect Element menu, I saw both .css and .js files, but it seemed to be primarily Java. I saw one .php file in there that I didn't really recognize.

I don't think this project was created with minimal computing in mind because of the visual & stylistic effects and map view that the project implements. Unfortunately, the map view feature wasn't working for me and I wasn't able to see its actual implementation. This is one of the issues that unfortunately comes with using more computing power, as more elements means more potential problems.
