M2EX renamed to medieval2.exe cannot find steam_api64.dll and mss64.dll after PC restart

Hello,

I installed M2EX on steam license, and it was working fine. I renamed M2EX.exe to medieval2.exe, and it continued to work without problems.

However, after restarting my PC, the renamed M2EX.exe can no longer find steam_api64.dll and mss64.dll. If I rename the original game executable back to medieval2.exe, the game launches normally.

I tried reinstalling the game. After reinstalling, M2EX works again at first, but after restarting the PC, the same issue happens again.

Could you please help me understand why M2EX loses access to steam_api64.dll and mss64.dll after a restart, and how I can fix it permanently?

looks like smart app control or good old windows defender, check if

1. smart app control is on (it doesn't let your PC run any "untrusted" application)
2. if windows defender removed any of the DLLs (if yes, do let me know!!)

Yeah, you were right about Windows Defender. I should’ve checked it myself. It’s so weird that it only quarantined it after I restarted the PC.
