Steam Linux Runtime 4.0 update crashes 2nd app run in prefix

Describe the bug

I have Palworld installed via Steam. I have another app called PalCalc in a completely separate directory that I created a .desktop file for. I could run PalCalc on it's own (no Palworld running) or I could start Palworld first and then also run PalCalc once Palworld had loaded. Since Steam Runtime updated a few days ago, Palcalc will no longer run if it's started after Palworld (like it did before). It will only run if Palworld is not also running.

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Steam Linux Runtime 4.0 updated (approximate date of update was 23 April)
2. Start Palworld from Steam as normal (compatibility is set to Proton Experimental as default)
3. Run command protontricks-launch --appid 1623730 /mnt/Mindtrick/Palworld/PalCalc/PalCalc.UI.exe from terminal (or launch from .desktop file which is the same command)
4. Command fails and error is displayed:

Expected behavior

PalCalc will launch as normal even with Palworld running (like it did before the Steam Runtime updated).

System:

• Distro: Artix Linux, Kernel 6.19.12-artix1-1 (64-bit), KDE Plasma 6.6.4, Wayland.
• Protontricks installation method: pacman (from the Arch Extra repo)
• Protontricks version: protontricks (1.14.1)
• Steam version: Stable Client, version: 1773426488 (steam 1.0.0.85-6 package via Artix lib32 repo)

Apologies if this isn't a Protontricks issue. I can't think what else it would be since it ran fine before Steam Runtime was updated.

Could you try running the command again with --no-bwrap flag (eg. protontricks-launch --no-bwrap --appid 1623730 /mnt/Mindtrick/Palworld/PalCalc/PalCalc.UI.exe)? This might help if unintended sandboxing is preventing cross-process communication.

The application seems to crash when enumerating processes with an "Access denied" error, so it would track with the crash occurring if Palworld is running at the same time.

Protontricks itself doesn't try to sandbox anything (unless you've installed the Flatpak version), so it could be a recent addition to Steam Runtime. And I believe the same is true for Steam Runtime itself (eg. the container is a compatibility mechanism, not a security boundary), though that could have changed at some point.

I don't have Palworld, so I couldn't test this particular scenario. But I tested hooking into a running game (with updated Proton Experimental and Steam Runtime 4) using the Windows version of Cheat Engine (launched with regular protontricks-launch "Cheat Engine.exe" command); it worked on both Pop_OS and Arch.

I think the issue might be related to either the application, Proton or your environment (do you have a security feature like AppArmor on?)

If you're feeling adventurous, you could try enabling more verbose Wine logs (eg. WINEDEBUG=+relay protontricks-launch ...) or running strace on the application (the exception in the error message alone doesn't tell what exactly caused the "Access denied" error to be raised) , and try to see what happens when the application crashes.
